How To Use A Hair Oil Correctly: Dos & Don’ts

Finding the perfect hair oil for your locks can be a life-changer. Often a missed step in a routine, hair oils can help solve some of the most common yet biggest tress stresses. But with so many different types of hair serums available in the market, how do you pick the best one for your hair? And how exactly do you use it for maximum benefits?

Equal parts shine enhancer, styling product, heat protectant and hydrator, our new Like A Virgin Miracle Hair Elixir is here to level up your hair game, read on to find out how to make the most of this multi-purpose treat(ment)!

“I use this product everyday, on damp hair before blow-drying, on dry hair as a heat-protectant & even after styling for a smooth glossy finish to my hair!” VIP Customer, Tiya

CARE

DO Apply to damp hair before blow drying

Constant heat styling can really take its toll on your hair, leaving it dry, brittle, damaged and dull. So, attempting it without using protection? Seems kinda (coco)nuts to us!

Make sure you apply our oil to damp hair before blow drying to shield your strands. Protecting hair up to 220°c our newest hair hero will also get your nose tingling with its exotic tropical scent. De-lish!

DO Use a hair oil as an overnight treatment

Staying indoors may save your hair from UV damage from the sun, but air-conditioning and heating can leave hair feeling frazzled and dehydrated. So, to help maintain hydration, apply a hair oil to dry hair before bed and seal it with a hair wrap. However, if you are in need a quick hydration boost, run a few drops of hair oil through damp hair, and allow your strands to soak up all the good stuff.

DON’T Apply to the roots

Like most shine-enhancing products, a hair oil should be applied to the mid-lengths and ends only. Applying too much product at the roots can weigh hair down and, as it’s rich in nourishing oils, it may cause unwanted greasiness. Not a cute look! So, make sure you apply your hair oil only where it’s actually needed – you’ll avoid wasting product and achieve more volume.

STYLE

DO Use on dry hair before curling or straightening

Even if you’re working with dry hair, you should always protect your strands from the heat of your styling tools. Prepping your hair for curling or straightening with a hair oil or elixir will prevent damage and make styling even easier. Lightweight and non-greasy, our Like A Virgin Miracle Hair Elixir allows your tools to glide smoothly and makes a professional salon finish a piece of cake.

Your secret to nailing that sleek ponytail!

DO Use to add shine to a slick ponytail

For an ultra-slick, pin-straight fashion pony (or silky-smooth bun), prep your hair for success with a oil. Smoothing pesky split ends, preventing flyaways and taming any frizz, a hard-working hair oil will give you a perfectly polished result. Enriched with vitamins, our hair oil also helps enhance shine, thanks to prickly pear and our signature raw virgin coconut oil.

DO Use in damp hair to define your curls

As every curly girl knows, keeping curls looking fresh, bouncy and defined – not frizzy and tangled – requires a bit of effort. Or a multi-tasking hair oil! To enhance your natural curls or waves and eliminate frizz, smooth some hair oil through towel-dried locks and air-dry or dry with a diffuser, using a scrunching motion to boost your volume and curl.

FINISH

DO Smooth through damp hair when air-drying

Taking a break from heat styling and letting your hair air dry every now and then is a good move. But it’s an even better move if you smooth on a super-hydrating hair oil! Hair experts say it’s best to apply hair oils directly to damp hair for best results. That said, do be careful not to overdo it, as it may make your hair greasy and heavy.

DO Run through dry strands to tame flyaways

Even those of us with naturally glossy locks still have to deal with misbehaving mops from time to time. Thankfully, a finishing hair oil can work wonders on a dry ‘do – smoothing frizz, taming flyaways and wrangling errant baby hairs into submission.

DON’T Be too generous

Remember that a little of our Miracle Hair Elixir goes a long way, and don’t be too heavy handed. You only need a few drops to boost hydration and shine, and the amount you need will also depend on your hair length and texture. So, for fine, short hair, try about 2 drops, and use up to 4 generous drops for a wild, curly mane.

“I love that the formula is very lightweight and doesn’t weigh down the hair or leave a greasy, sticky residue like other hair oils i’ve used. The icing on the cake is that it smells divine!” Celeb Hair Stylist, Cali Lorian Thomas.

HOW TO USE

To experience the magic of our Miracle Hair Elixir, squeeze a few drops into your palms and rub together, then run hands through your mid-lengths and ends. Apply to wet or dry hair before blow drying or leaving hair to dry naturally. You can (should!) also use on dry hair before heat styling (curling, straightening) for thermal protection and soft, shiny results.

Pro-tip: For an intense overnight treatment, wrap your hair with our Microfibre Towel Wrap after coating your hair strands with our hair oil.
